DIY pom pom rug – Steps

Step 1

First, we are going to make several pom-poms which we will tie up to the mat later. So let’s see how to make a pom-pom!

Wrap the yarn around your palm approximately 120 times. Carefully remove it from your palm without unwrapping.

Step 2

Tie another piece of yarn around its middle and make sure to leave some extra length of it unused. Remember, you are going to use this same yarn while tying the pom-pom to the mat.

Step 3

Cut open both the sides using scissors and gently fluff it up. You have made the first pom-pom for this rug. Cut any extra lengths of yarn which are standing out to make it perfectly round.

Step 4

Make a lot of these pom-poms. I used up 5 bundles of yarn to cover my mat fully. I watched a movie while doing this part. That way, I didn’t even know I was doing it and by the end of the movie, I had a lot of pom-poms on my sofa!

Step 5

Start tying these pom-poms to the floor mat until the mat is fully covered. Fasten them with a knot underneath the mat using the extra length of yarn which we left from Step 2.

Step 6

Ensure you don’t leave much space between each pom-pom and tie them firmly. Make the top and sides more uniform by cutting any extra lengths of yarn which are projecting out.

Quick tip: You can cut the floor-mat to your desired shape before tying the pom-poms to it. For example, you can make a heart, square or even a  triangle-shaped rug with this method.  A heart-shaped rug made of red pom-poms is a perfect room-decor idea on Valentine’s Day! Use your desired colours of pom-pom and design your bedroom the way you always wanted 🙂
