Steps to Make a Paper Plate Hatching Chick Craft
Follow these simple steps to make this adorable paper plate hatching chick craft. As kids move the popsicle stick, the chick pops out of the egg and can be played with like a fun little puppet. Simply use our Hatching Chick Craft Template to create this cute and interactive spring or Easter activity.
Step 1
Grab a large dinner-size paper plate for this craft. We need a big plate so there’s plenty of room to move the popsicle stick and make the egg open and close, revealing the baby chick’s face.
Now paint the paper plate. We used blue watercolor for ours. Let it dry completely.

Step 2
While the paper plate is drying, go ahead and print the hatching chick craft template on a white thin cardstock (8.5 x 11 inch).

Step 3
Next, color the template, including the egg shell, the chick, and the grass. We used watercolor for these parts. Finally, color the chick’s nose using a marker.

Step 4
After the colors dry, carefully cut out all the parts.

Step 5
Apply glue over the baby chick’s body, sparing the face and a bit of the top portion of the body. Leave these areas free so they remain visible outside of the shell.

Step 6
Now stick one half of the egg shell onto the glued part of the chick’s body, leaving the unglued part visible.

Step 7
Next, apply glue carefully under it, covering both the shell and the top part of the chick. Then, position and stick it onto the paper plate close to the rim. Placing it near the edge ensures there’s enough space for the baby chick’s face to peek out and for the popsicle stick to move the egg open and closed.

Step 8
Now, let’s add some grass under the shell for extra detail. Apply glue to the bottom strip of the grass, leaving the top part free, and stick it along the rim below the egg shell.

Step 9
Now, give the chick a cheerful face by drawing two eyes with a black marker. Then attach the nose carefully.

Step 10
Get a jumbo-sized popsicle stick and apply glue to one end, about 2 cm in length. We used regular paper glue, which worked well, but you can use hot glue for a stronger hold if you prefer.

Step 11
Stick the other piece of the egg shell onto the popsicle stick, making sure to glue only the top part, about 2 cm long. If you used paper glue, wait a few minutes for it to set before playing with it as a puppet.

Step 12
Now, make a slit on the opposite side of the paper plate using a paper knife, ensuring it aligns perfectly with the baby chick’s face so the egg closes properly when you move the popsicle stick. Make sure only grown-ups do this step.

Step 13
Insert the popsicle stick through the slit, and the baby chick craft will be ready to play as a puppet, with just one final detail to finish it off.

Step 14
Stick the cloud piece onto the paper plate, away from the egg shells and popsicle stick for extra detail. Now the paper plate hatching chick craft is fully assembled and ready for hours of playful fun.

Move the popsicle stick up and down to watch the paper plate hatching chick pop out of its egg and come to life. Wasn’t it super easy and fun to make? This playful puppet craft is perfect for kids to enjoy during Easter and spring, bringing a cheerful and interactive touch to story time or classroom activities.
